Cross Country ranked in preseason polls
MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State men’s and women’s cross country teams will start the 2012 season both ranked in the top six of the Central Region Rankings released Thursday. The Bearcat women also start the year at No. 22 in the national poll.
The Bearcats appear in the Central Region as the MIAA makes a move from the South Central Region. Other leagues that will comprise the new region include: the MIAA, the Great American Conference and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
The Northwest men enter the first regional rankings at No. 6 after a fifth place finish last year in the South Central Region. The Bearcats were also picked to finish fifth in the MIAA preseason poll released in early August.
Augustana was picked first followed by East Central (Okla.) and Central Missouri at No. 3. Minnesota State was fourth followed by Missouri Southern at No. 5 just head of Northwest.
For the Northwest women, the Bearcats were picked fifth after a third place finish in the South Central Region in 2011. Northwest was picked fifth in the MIAA preseason coaches’ poll released in early August.
With high expectations for 2012 the Bearcats also find themselves in the top 25 national poll checking in at No. 22.
Augustana starts the year at No.1 on the women’s side as well, with University of Mary at No.2. MIAA foe Pittsburg State checks in at No.3 as the only league team ahead of the Bearcats, while Minnesota-Duluth sits at No. 4.
Northwest opens the 2012 season Sept. 7 hosting its annual Northwest Bearcat Open at the Maryville Country Club.
