MIAA Cross Country polls released, Bearcats 5th
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State men’s and women’s cross country teams were each picked to finish fifth in their respective polls as the MIAA preseason rankings were revealed by the league office Tuesday.
The Bearcat men’s cross country team were runner-up at last year’s MIAA Cross Country Championships finishing behind Central Missouri who was picked to repeat in 2012. The Mules received seven first place votes as Missouri Southern received two first place votes and was picked second.
Pittsburg State was picked third, as MIAA newcomer Nebraska-Kearney was picked to finish just ahead of Northwest at fourth. Rounding out the 10 men’s teams were Southwest Baptist picked to finish sixth followed by Fort Hays State at No. 7, Lindenwood at No. 8, Emporia State at No. 9 and Truman State picked to finish tenth.
On the women’s side Pittsburg State was picked to repeat as league champions as Missouri Southern was tabbed second, the same one-two finish as last year’s MIAA Women’s Cross Country Championships.
Truman State was picked third followed by Southwest Baptist at No. 4 and the Bearcat women rounding out the top five. The Northwest women finished fifth at last year’s MIAA Championships in Joplin. Nebraska-Kearney was tabbed sixth with Fort Hays State at No. 7, Central Missouri at No. 8 and Central Oklahoma at No. 9.
Rounding out the final three spots are Lindenwood, Emporia State and Lincoln to close out the 12 women’s teams in the polls at 10, 11 and 12 respectively.
Northwest opens its season at home on Sept. 7 with the Northwest Bearcat Open. The 2012 MIAA Cross Country Championships will be hosted by Northwest on Oct. 20 in Maryville.
