The Northwest Missouri State cross country teams will be traveling to Fayetteville, Ark., this Saturday for the 22nd annual Chile Pepper Festival. The Festival was created to bring together three Northwest Arkansas cross country races under a single event and help raise money for area high school cross country programs. Close to $24,000 was donated to area programs in 2009.
The three events that were combined were the Arkansas Invitational, the annual Lady'Back and Razorback home meet and the Fayetteville High School's Purple Dog Invitational. The Chile Pepper Festival is now one of the premier running events in America.
Nearly 4,000 athletes will participate in Saturday's festival and more than 70 collegiate teams will compete. Missouri Southern and Southwest Baptist from the MIAA will be running along with several other South Central Regional schools including Dallas Baptist, who is currently ranked fifth in the women's regional poll.
The Bearcats didn't compete last week but are coming off a strong finish at the Emporia State Invite two weeks ago. The Northwest women won the event and junior Angela Adams was the top collegiate runner, finishing with a time of 17:57.27. Adams has been the top collegiate finisher in both races she's competed in this season.
The Northwest men also had a strong showing at ESU taking third out of 25 teams. Junior T.R. Pursell has been the Bearcats' top finisher in all three events this season for the men.
The Bearcat women are currently ranked sixth in the region while the men entered this week's rankings at No. 10. The Missouri Southern men and women are ranked seventh and fourth, respectively in the region.
The men will compete first Saturday with the 10K race starting at 9:45 a.m. The women will be running a 5K at 10:30 a.m. The awards presentation will follow at a little after 11 a.m.
