Bearcat Men Travel to MIAA Championship Meet
MARYVILLE, Mo.-The Northwest Missouri State men's cross country team will travel to Emporia, Kan., this weekend for the MIAA conference championship meet on Saturday morning at 11:15, which will be held at Emporia State.
"I expect us to compete fearlessly and perform to our optimal level," said head coach Scott Lorek.
Coach Lorek has a positive feeling about his runners and trusts in their consistency. Last season Trevor Johannsen and Zach Layton finished ninth and tenth, with eight-kilometer times of 26:03.83 and 26:08.53 respectively. Layton went on to finish 11th at the NCAA South Central Regional with a ten-kilometer time of 32:00, and was named the MIAA Freshman of the Year.
The Northwest men have performed well this season, and are coming off of a third place finish at DePauw University two weeks ago. Layton finished fifth with a time of 26:04, followed by T.R. Pursell in sixth with a time of 26:08. Northwest has had three different runners be the top finisher for them so far this season in their four meets.
The last time the men ran at Emporia State it was on Oct. 2 as they finished second at the Emporia State Invite. Pursell led the Bearcats with a 6th place finish and a time of 25:48.49 in the race.
The team also has a few runners that have the potential to mix it up on Saturday as well. Jared Walker, who is generally the fifth runner for the team, has shown improvement this season, and coach Lorek believes Walker along with Jake Henry will continue to get better and move up.
"This men's team believes that they can have a solid impact on this conference. The team has trained hard this year, and has become confident in their abilities," Lorek said. "They've done it in training and they are going to do it on Saturday as well."
