Bearcats Head to MIAA Championships
MARYVILLE, Mo. -The Northwest Missouri State women's cross country team will compete this Saturday at the MIAA Championships in Emporia, Kan. The Bearcat's are currently ranked sixth in the latest NCAA South Central regional poll.
The MIAA Championships will be very challenging for the Bearcats as there are currently four teams in the MIAA ranked above them in the regional poll.
"It could be a mess and a mob out there, every place will be very important, and will come down to just a few seconds," said head coach Scott Lorek. "The MIAA is so loaded and competitive this season. It has the best depth that I've seen. Some team is going to finish last on Saturday in the race and that could be a very talented team."
Northwest hasn't competed since the DePauw Invitational on Oct. 10 where the Bearcats finished third. However, coach Lorek feels that the team is in a good position and is coming along together at the right time.
"We are right on the money as far as where we want to be as a team right now peaking wise," said Lorek.
Northwest has had a different runner finish as their top finisher in three of the four races they've competed in this season. It's because of this depth that coach Lorek feels good about his team's chances.
"Anyone of five or six runners could be our top finisher in this race. They are all in a super position and anyone of them could be our top runner. They're all running so close together that I wouldn't be surprised if any one of them finished number one for us," said Lorek.
Emporia State will be the host school for the Championships. On Oct. 2nd Northwest ran on the same course it will on Saturday, at the Emporia State Invite. The Bearcats went on to win that meet. Coach Lorek will be hoping for the same type of finish on Saturday from his team.
"My expectations for Saturday are that we compete well and run fearlessly," said Lorek.
