Johannsen and Layton Earn All-MIAA Honors as Both Teams Finish 8th
WARRENSBURG, Mo. - Trevor Johannsen and Zach Layton both finished in the top 10 to earn All-MIAA honors, but the Northwest men couldn't capitalize and finished eighth in the MIAA Cross Country Championships this morning at Keth Memorial Golf Course in Warrensburg, Mo. The women finished eighth of nine teams.
Johannsen placed ninth overall to lead Northwest with a season-best 26:03.83. Layton finished a spot behind in 10th and was the first freshman to finish, earning him MIAA Freshman of the Year honors. The two Bearcat men's teams, Northwest and Southwest Baptist, were the only schools with two runners earning All-MIAA honors, as Southwest Baptist went on to win the team title with 63 points.
Jessica Nichols led the Bearcat women for the first time this season with a season-best 24:27.71 and finished 30th overall in the six-kilometer race. The top five Northwest runners all finished within 50 seconds of each other, but scored 200 teams points in an eighth-place finish. Missouri Southern won its third consecutive women's title with three runners earning All-MIAA accolades.
Up Next: Both Northwest teams take the next weekend off to prepare for the NCAA South Central Regional meet Nov. 8. Races begin in San Antonio, Texas, at 9:30 a.m.
