Bearcats to Take Part in Inaugural Loper Open
MARYVILLE, Mo. - A second trip to Nebraska concludes the cross country regular season for both Northwest teams as the Bearcats head to the inaugural Loper Open in Kearney, Neb. Oct. 11. The meet will be held at the Kearney Country Club just north of the Nebraska-Kearney campus.
The men and women are running the same meet for the first time since the Woody Greeno Open Sept. 20. The men and women both finished 11th at their individual meets, the Roy Griak and Cowboy Jamboree respectively, during the past two weeks.
Northwest will be the only MIAA squad in Kearney, but the RMAC will be sending five of its 11 teams. Included in that mix are the host Lopers, the No. 6 men's team in Colorado School of Mines and the No. 19 women's team of Mesa State. All teams will be running at the same site of the Nebraska high school cross country championships.
Angela Adams made her first appearance in nearly a month at Stillwater, Okla., last weekend, and returned to form to lead the Bearcats for the second time this season with 20:19 in the five-kilometer race. Mary Jantz finished second for Northwest for the third time in 2008, placing 45th overall at the Cowboy Jamboree with 20:23. The top five runners all finished within 40 seconds of each other.
Zach Layton will look to continue leading the Bearcat men after finishing first for Northwest in the past two meets. Layton finished 27th of 256 runners in Minneapolis, Minn., and ran 10 seconds faster than the week before in Lincoln, Neb. All nine Bearcat runners improved their eight-kilometer times against the previous weekend at the Woody Greeno Open Sept. 20.
Saturday will be the final meet before the MIAA Championship at Keth Memorial Golf Course in Warrensburg, Mo., Oct. 25.
