Northwest Opens Season with Bearcat/Spoofhound Open

Meet Notes (.pdf)

MARYVILLE, Mo. - Northwest Missouri State runners will begin the 2008 season when the starter's gun goes off for the Bearcat/Spoofhound Open Sept. 6 at the Bearcat Cross Country Course. College women will run a 5K course at 10:20 a.m. with the men running four miles at 11 a.m. High school races start the morning at 9 a.m.

It will be head coach Scott Lorek's first meet as the head coach for both men's and women's teams, after working with the Bearcat women's team since 2004. He will be joined by assistant coach Tessa Koschel, who competed as a student-athlete when Lorek coached at Western State College.

Highland Community College and Peru State are both expected to participate (Peru State women only), as well as a number of unattached alumni runners. In that alumni field will be graduate assistant and alumnus Matt Pohren, who won the inaugural meet last season.

Ben Chappell will be the top male returner from last season, earning Honorable Mention All-MIAA and MIAA Runner of the Week accolades. T.R. Pursell, David Franz and Ryan Gates all earned points for Northwest at the NCAA South Central Regional in 2007 and will return for 2008.

The Bearcat women took the meet title last year with a perfect team score of 15, and will look to do the same again. Maggie McManigal will be the top returning runner after Anna O'Brien opted for a redshirt season this year. McManigal is the top returning runner from the last three races of 2007, running the program's fourth-fastest 6K time at the NCAA regional meet.

The course, constructed in 2007, will start and finish in the intramural field between the High Rise Tennis Courts and Bearcat Baseball Field. Runners will complete the middle section of the course in the area south of Donaldson Westside Park and west of Icon Road.
