Lorek Named to Lead Women's Track/XC Squads

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Northwest Missouri State University head women's Director of Athletics Dr. Bob Boerigter has announced the hiring of Scott Lorek as head women's track and field/cross country coach. Lorek replaces Vicki Wooton, who resigned earlier this summer.

For the past five years, Lorek has been the head men's and women's track and field coach at Western State College in Gunnison, Colo. He led Western State to a second-place finish at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships in 2002 and was third in 2004. His men's team has been in the top five in NCAA Division II for the past three seasons. Lorek was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Women's Indoor and Outdoor Coach of the Year in 2001, also winning the RMAC Indoor championship that season.

"Coach Lorek has experienced a great deal of success throughout his career and we feel very fortunate to have him as part of our staff here at Northwest," Boerigter said. "We expect that trend to continue with Scott leading the Bearcat program."

Prior to his time at Western State, Lorek was the head men's and women's track and field/cross country coach at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio for two seasons. He was an assistant coach at Butler University for one season in 1996-97.

Lorek was the head women's track and field/cross country coach at the University of Idaho for 11 years. He coached Idaho athletes to school records in 23 of 33 events and coached NCAA qualifiers in cross country and four track and field events. Lorek also served as an assistant at Idaho for two seasons and was a graduate assistant at the University of Illinois.

"My wife and I are absolutely thrilled about the opportunities and challenges at Northwest and we can't wait to move out there and get started," Lorek said. "I'm really looking forward to running a program at a place that wants to see athletes succeed and wants to provide a good environment for that. Northwest is a really progressive place and that really attracted me to this position."

Lorek finishes his duties at Western State Friday and will begin at Northwest on August 16.
