Northwest Cheerleaders Ranked Best in the Country
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State University now has three more nationally ranked teams. After submitting a video entry, Northwest's cheerleading squad is ranked first in the nation for Division II teams. Bobby Bearcat tied for fourth with Spike from Drake University and the Bearcat Steppers are ranked sixth. All three have the chance to compete at nationals in Orlando, Fla, in 2010.
The video was submitted by Northwest head cheerleading coach and spirit squad coordinator, Jason Sack, and was judged on a 100-point scale. The different portions of the video showed the Bearcat cheerleaders ability to lead and communicate with a crowd using signs and choreography, and overall skill level. The skill level was based of off ability to do partner stunts, pyramids, basket tosses and tumbling.
The steppers were also judged on a 100-point scale, which comprised of four categories: presentation and image of team performance, choreography, technique and group execution.
Also submitted with the video was a recording of the Northwest crowd. Highlights of the crowd video will be played during the National Championship and will count for 15% of the total score.
Bobby Bearcat tied for fourth. Mascots were judged on overall character development, game situations, crowd involvement, cheer/dance/band integration, community service, non-sport school activities and overall impression.
The steppers, cheerleaders and Bobby each received their highest ranking in program history. This was the first year Bobby has been invited to compete. The National Championships will be held January 15-18 in Orlando, Fla.
