Cheerleaders Take Fifth, Steppers Ninth at Nationals
ORLANDO, Fla. - The Northwest Missouri State cheerleaders placed fifth and the Bearcat Steppers took ninth in the 2009 University Cheerleaders Association/Universal Dance Association College Nationals, held at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex Jan. 16-18. The full routine is tenatively scheduled to be shown Feb. 22 at 1:30 p.m. and March 13 at 2 p.m. on ESPN2.
Northwest finished third in last year's competition. This is the first year the Steppers participated in the UDA national competition since 2004 and its the first top ten performance since 2003.
The Bearcat cheerleaders were judged on the execution and difficulty of certain stunts and cheers, including basket tosses, pyramids, partner stunts, tumbling, crowd leading ability and overall collegiate image within a two and half minute routine set to music. Northwest received a perfect crowd score for the third straight year, which was based on submitted video.
Northwest scored 328 out of 400 possible points and finished ahead of seventh-place Pittsburg State University. The University of West Georgia won the competition for the eighth consecutive year with 351.5 points.
The Bearcat Steppers were judged on execution, difficulty and skills, within the categories of overall effect, choreography, technique and group execution during a two-minute routine performed to music.
Northwest scored 643 out of 800 possible points. Orange Coast College won the event for the sixth time with 741 points. The Mulekickers of Central Missouri finished 13th in the 14-team finals field as the only other MIAA team in the competition.
