Griffons sweep Bearcats in double-header
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State baseball team could not get the bats going against Missouri Western Thursday in game one falling 6-1 and were unable to complete the comeback in game two losing 6-5.
Austin Warren was tagged with the loss in game one as he went the distance pitching all six innings.
Missouri Western scored early getting three runs across in the bottom of the first inning.
Ryan Abernathy collected the Bearcats only run in the top of the third inning when he knocked in Paul Johnson making the score 3-1.
The Griffons added three more runs in the bottom half of the fifth and despite two hits in the seventh inning the Bearcats could not plate any more runs and dropped game one 6-1.
Game two started with Northwest and Missouri Western trading runs in the first inning and the Griffons adding two more in the third to go up 3-1.
The Bearcats managed three hits through the first six innings and entered the seventh inning trailing 5-1.
Johnson led off the seventh with a bunt single and later scored along with Derek Meyer on an Abernathy shot up the middle to make the score 5-3.
The Griffons got one of the runs back in the bottom half of the inning on a solo home run. Charlie Krueger answered back scoring Steven Garber on a fielder’s choice bringing the score to 6-4.
Trailing by two entering the top of the ninth, Brandon Huske was hit by a pitch to get on base followed by Cam Bedard who walked. Bedard was thrown out at second on a double steal attempt. Garber knocked in Huske to bring them within one but was left stranded as the game ended 6-5.
Rob Henrichs was tagged with the loss, his first of the season. Blane Ruetter and Tyler Barth came in for relief and combined for 5.1 innings pitched with two strikeouts and one walk.
The Bearcats are now 9-18, 7-14 in the 2013 season. Northwest will return home to take on Missouri Southern for a three game set. Game one of the double-header is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. Friday followed by game two. The final game of the series will be on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for noon.
