'Cats fall to Ichabods
MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team fell in MIAA action Saturday afternoon to the Washburn University Ichabods falling 6-5 in game one and 12-8 in the nightcap.
With the losses, Northwest now sits at 14-30 overall and 13-21 in conference play. The Bearcats are still in the hunt for the MIAA post-season tournament as they are currently five games out of the sixth place and the final tournament spot with six games remaining in the 2012 season.
Game one saw the Bearcats jump out to an early 3-0 lead as Ryan Abernathy would lead off with a single through the left side. Two Ichabod errors helped put the Bearcat runs on the board.
The Ichabods would even the score in the third on five hits before taking a 5-3 lead in the fifth.
Northwest rallied in the sixth as Tyler Durant led off with a single up the middle. Charlie Krueger would pinch hit and blast a two-run home run on the first pitch he saw to even the score at 5-5.
A Bearcat error gave the lead back to the Ichabods as they would go on to take the 6-5 win in game one.
Josh Parrish suffered the loss on the mound for the Bearcats throwing 1.1 innings of relief and allowing no earned runs.
Offensively, Abernathy and Durant recorded three and two hits respectively for the Bearcats.
The Ichabods’ bats came alive in game two as they took an early 4-0 lead in the first inning.
Washburn’s bats would stay hot as they added two runs in the second, one run in the third and two runs in the fourth to up their advantage to 9-0.
Northwest would get on the board in the fourth as Abernathy and Durant would each record singles to cut the Ichabods’ lead to 9-2.
The Ichabods kept swinging as they would again extend their lead to 12-2 in the sixth.
The Bearcats would rally as another Durant hit would help plate one run in the sixth before they Bearcat bats would come alive in the seventh plating five runs off of hits from Abernathy, Cameron Bedard, Eric McGlauflin and Luke Lawyer cutting the Washburn lead to 12-8.
Ichabod reliever Joey Hinckley would silence the Bearcat bats the final two frames to secure the Washburn win.
Jace Anderson would suffer the loss on the mound for the Bearcats throwing four innings before Nick Caldrone came on in relief. Caldrone would toss five innings and allow five hits.
McGlauflin led the Bearcats offensively in the game recording three hits while Durant added two.
