‘Cats rally to win, take series from FHSU
HAYS, Kansas –The Northwest Missouri State Bearcat baseball team finished off their weekend with a 12-11 victory over the Fort Hays State Tigers on a gusty Sunday afternoon at Larks Park.
With the win, the Bearcats improve to 4-8 overall and 3-1 in MIAA play. The Tigers fell to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in conference play with the loss.
Eric Swain got the Bearcats off to a hot start as he belted a two-run home run down the leftfield line to put Northwest up 2-0 in the first.
Fort Hays would answer in the second frame when Shane Wade hit a solo home run to bring the Tigers within one.
The Tigers would take the lead in the third when Ryan Busboom would launch a grand slam to centerfield giving Fort Hays the 5-2 advantage.
Steven Garber would get two runs back for the Bearcats in the top of the fourth when he hit his fourth home run of the weekend, this one being a two-run shot over the left field fence to bring the Bearcats within one.
A Nash Smith double and Northwest wild pitch would help the Tigers tack on three runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead to 8-4.
The Bearcats would get hot to start the fifth as they would bat through the order before the inning was done. After a Ryan Abernathy double and Cameron Bedard being hit by a pitch, an unforced throwing error by Fort Hays would push Abernathy and Bedard across the plate for the Bearcats. Tyler Durant would single to left center to score another run for Northwest.
Steven Garber would follow suit with a single to right-center to score Durant and Eric McGlauflin who had reached base via a walk. A wild pitch would allow Garber to cross home plate and put the Bearcats up 10-8.
The Tigers would battle back and push two runs across in the bottom of the fifth but Northwest would answer right back as doubles from Abernathy, Bedard and McGlauflin would push two runs across the plate for the Bearcats.
Brett Macari would hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth, but that would be as close as the Tigers would get as both teams’ bats would be silenced for the final three frames giving the Bearcats the 12-11 win.
Nathanial Horton earned the win for the Bearcats after allowing just three hits while Josh Parrish recorded his first save of the season for Northwest allowing no hits in 3.2 innings of work.
Swain led a balanced Bearcat attack, finishing the day 3-for-5 with four RBIs.
Abernathy and Garber also recorded multiple hits for Northwest.
“Our entire team competed extremely well all weekend,” said head coach Darin Loe. “To lose a heart-breaker like we did yesterday and follow it up with two wins on the road against a quality opponent shows the tremendous character of our team.”
For the weekend, the Bearcats compiled an astounding 55 hits, including 16 home runs, on their way to scoring 61 runs.
Up Next: The Bearcats continue MIAA play next weekend when they travel to Emporia, Kansas for a four-game series with the 8th-ranked Emporia State Hornets.
