Northwest offense power to split with FHSU
HAYS, Kan. – Offense was again on display Saturday as the Northwest Missouri State baseball team split a double header with Fort Hays State in MIAA college baseball action at Larks Park.
The Bearcats improved to3-8 on the season and 2-1 in league play as the two teams will tangle in the series finale on Sunday. First pitch from Hays, Kan., is set for noon as Northwest looks to take its first conference series of the season.
Game One – Box Score
A leadoff double from Anthony Salinas made way for a two out, walk-off single from Brandon Hoefler giving FHSU a 9-8 win in game one.
Both teams had traded runs early as the Tigers got on the board first in the first, but Northwest answered with a run in the top of the second.
After Travis Green blasted his fourth home run in two days giving Northwest a 3-1 lead, the Tigers answered back with six runs in the fifth inning to take a 6-3 lead.
However, the Bearcats would not go quietly as Jake Kretzer blasted a two-run homer to spark a five run inning for Northwest. Taking a 7-6 lead FHSU would tie the game again in the sixth setting up the game-winning walk-off in the seventh.
Game Two – Box Score
The nightcap was again saw a barrage of hits as Northwest broke open the game in the top of the second with a nine-run inning. That would be all the offense the Bearcats needed, but it did not come without a fight.
FHSU would rally with four more runs in the second and add runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to pull within 12-10.
After a solid outing from starter Chase Anderson, who went five innings scattering eight hits, Northwest used a trio out of their bullpen to close out the Tigers.
Carson Smith came on with one out in the sixth allowing a run, but striking out two to pick up the save.
Cameron Bedard and Ryan Abernathy both finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI each in the win.
