Bearcats drop season finale to conference champion ESU
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Emporia State's Derek Brooks pitched a complete game six-hit shutout Sunday afternoon as Northwest Missouri State's season came to an end with a 6-0 loss at Bearcat Field. Brooks threw 114 pitches and struck out five and walked none in the Bearcats' season finale.
Emporia State clinched at least a share of the MIAA title with the win. The Hornets broke a pitcher's battle wide open in the fifth inning with a five-run top half to take a 5-0 lead. All five of Emporia State's runs came with two outs. The Hornets' lone run in the seventh inning came with two outs as well.
Christian Dekker got the start on the hill for Northwest (20-30, 19-25 MIAA). Dekker pitched five innings and allowed three earned runs off of eight hits while striking out two Hornet batters in the final game of his career.
Aaron Amaral, Anthony Moctezuma and Jeremy Tate came in and pitched four innings of solid relief. Moctezuma allowed the lone run in two innings of work off of four hits while striking out three. Amaral pitched an inning of hitless relief, while Tate worked the ninth and allowed just one hit as Northwest pitched all seniors playing in their final game.
Cameron Bedard was the lone Bearcat with multiple hits. Bedard went 2-for-3 in the loss. Jeff Hastert and Jake Kretzer were 1-for-3 each while Nathanial Horton and Alex Singleton both went 1-for-4 in the game.
