Bearcats fall short in "hit-fest"
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo.-The Northwest Missouri State baseball team lost a close battle on Friday afternoon as the Bearcats fell in the first game of their four-game series with Lincoln 7-5. The two teams combined for 29 hits in the game.
Five Bearcats (17-26, 16-21) collected multi-hit games in the loss as Northwest was led by Cam Bedard's 3-for-5 effort. Nathanial Horton, Jake Kretzer and Eric McGlauflin all went 2-for-5 in the game while Alex Singleton was 2-of-4.
After a Charlie Krueger solo homer tied the game in the second at 1-1, Lincoln responded with a two-run bottom of the second and a two-run third inning to jump out to an early 5-1 lead. Northwest clawed its way back into the game with an RBI single by Singleton in the fourth inning and a pair of solo home runs by Alec Rosales and Horton in the fifth to cut the Blue Tiger lead down to 6-4.
Both teams traded runs later in the game as Lincoln survived a bases loaded jam to surrender just one run in the eighth.
Kenny Brengle got the start and was tagged with the loss in the opener. Brengle allowed four earned runs and 10 hits in two and 1/3 innings of work. Aaron Amaral pitched two and 2/3 innings of relief for Brengle and gave up two runs. Jayson Huett came on to make his 24th appearance of the season for the Bearcats. Huett pitched three innings of hitless baseball while striking out two.
Northwest and Lincoln will continue the series Saturday afternoon. As of now, just one game will be played on Saturday with two on Sunday.
