Bearcats drop first two in series with Washburn
TOPEKA, Kan.-Washburn's Brett Ash and Derek Fogel each pitched complete games on Friday afternoon as Northwest Missouri State dropped the first two of its four-game series with Washburn 6-3 and 6-0.
In game one Washburn jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with a four-run third inning and then answered after Northwest's (16-24, 15-19 MIAA) three-run fifth inning with a run of its own in the fifth and another in the sixth. Northwest's offensive production came from Jake Kretzer's fielder's choice RBI, an RBI single to left field by Nathanial Horton and a sacrifice fly from Geno DeAngelis.
Kenny Brengle started on the mound for Northwest and allowed five runs (three earned) in four innings of work off of five hits. Jayson Huett pitched two innings of relief and allowed one run.
In game two, Fogel shutdown the Bearcats allowing six hits while striking out nine Bearcats. Another four-run third inning for the Ichabods (16-20, 15-16 MIAA) put them in front and it was all Fogel would need in the game as Washburn added two more in the seventh. Cameron Bedard went 2-for-4 in the game for Northwest.
Chase Anderson was tagged with the loss for Northwest as he pitched two and 2/3 innings and allowed four runs off six hits. Nick Caldrone and Christian Dekker came on in relief of Anderson. Dekker pitched one and 2/3 innings of hitless baseball for the Bearcats.
Northwest finishes its series with Washburn Saturday afternoon in another doubleheader. Game one is set to start at noon.
