Northwest drops two on day two at Western
ST. JOSEPH, Mo.-Missouri Western pitchers Oliver Kadey and Nik Jurado both pitched complete games and combined to strike-out nine Northwest Missouri State batters while allowing just one run on eight hits as the Griffons swept the Bearcats in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon. Scores went 9-1 and 4-0.
In game one, Northwest (6-19, 5-14) fell behind 3-0 after a Missouri Western three-run second inning. The Bearcats would get their lone run in the top of the sixth after a Geno DeAngelis single brought home Jake Kretzer. 3-1 was as close as Northwest would get as Western piled on five more runs in the bottom of the inning to lengthen its lead.
Nick Caldrone got the start on the mound for the Bearcats. Caldrone pitched one and one-third of an inning and allowed three runs on three hits and also walked three batters. Aaron Amaral had a solid performance out of the bullpen. Amaral went three and one-thirds of an inning and allowed one run on two hits while striking-out four.
In game two, Northwest managed just three hits as Missouri Western got all four of its runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Kretzer, Evan Connell and Brett Paterson collected the Bearcat hits in the loss.
Kenny Brengle started on the hill for Northwest, pitching five innings and allowing four runs on eight hits. Brengle also struck-out for Griffon batters. Josh Parrish pitched an inning of scoreless relief in the game.
Northwest and Missouri Western will close out its four-game series with a nine inning game on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
