Bearcats drop game one to Griffons, 3-2
ST. JOSEPH, Mo.-Missouri Western scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on Friday night as the Griffons topped Northwest Missouri State 3-2. Northwest committed six errors in the loss. Brandon Simmons went the distance for Western and struck-out 10.
Nathaniel Horton went 2-for-4 in the game for the Bearcats and had both RBIs in the loss. Horton would put Northwest (6-17, 5-12 MIAA) on the board in the first as he singled to left field and brought home Cameron Bedard. The Bearcats extended their lead in the top of the third inning when Alec Rosales scored on a Horton groundout to go up 2-0.
Western (11-10, 10-6 MIAA) would cut the Northwest lead in half at 2-1 in the third inning and Mac Collette scored the winning run for the Griffons as Andrew Pieper bunted for a hit in the eighth. Western out-hit Northwest 11-8 in the contest.
Geno DeAngelis was the other Bearcat in the game with multiple hits as he went 2-for-4. Jayson Huett was tagged with the loss despite not allowing an earned run. Huett allowed two hits in two innings of relief for starter Chase Anderson. Anderson went six innings for the Bearcats, allowing one run on eight hits while striking-out two batters.
Northwest and Missouri Western will continue its four-game set on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Both games will be seven innings.
