Northwest sweeps day two for first series win

MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State won its first series of the season on Saturday afternoon as the Bearcats swept Fort Hays State 4-1 and 9-0 from Bearcat Field, securing three victories of four with the Tigers.

The Bearcats jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning of game one behind a Brett Paterson single and an Evan Connell double that brought home Paterson. Northwest (4-13, 4-8 MIAA) took a three-run lead behind Paterson's second run of the game in the fourth inning when Landinn Eckhardt brought him in, and then tacked on one more in the fifth after Fort Hays State (9-9, 6-6 MIAA) had cut the lead to 3-1.

Kenny Brengle got the start on the hill for the Bearcats and won his second game of the season. Brengle pitched four and two-thirds of an inning allowing one run on five hits while walking four and striking-out three batters. Jayson Huett came on to get his second save in as many days. Huett pitched a hitless two and one-thirds of an inning while striking-out three Tigers.

Geno DeAngelis, Paterson and Alec Rosales all had two-hit games for the Bearcats in the win while Rosales had Northwest's other RBI.

In game two's shutout, the Bearcats got a great pitching performance from Chase Anderson. Anderson pitched six and one-thirds of an inning, allowing six hits and striking-out three batters.

Jake Kretzer had two RBIs in the win while Cameron Bedard, DeAngelis, Charlie Krueger, Ross Hastert and Rosales also collected an RBI each in the game. Hastert went 2-for-3 in the game and scored three runs while Connell and Krueger each went 2-for-4. The Bearcats collected three runs in the third inning to take advantage and then blew the game wide open in the seventh with three more runs.

Next up for the Bearcats will be a non-conference nine-inning game with Newman on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. from Bearcat Field. The Jets defeated Northwest 6-4 back on March 1 in Wichita, Kan.
