Bearcats lose non-conference tilt to Newman
WICHITA, Kan.-A three-run seventh inning proved to be costly for Northwest Missouri State Tuesday afternoon against Newman as the Bearcats were defeated 6-4 in Wichita, Kan. The Bearcats scored the first four runs of the game but couldn't stop Newman late.
Northwest got a four-run third inning to get on the board first thanks to a double by Geno DeAngelis that scored Jake Kretzer and a two-run double by Eric McGlaufflin that brought home DeAngelis and Alec Rosales. Another double, this time by Evan Connell, brought home McGlaufflin to round out the scoring for Northwest (0-5) in the inning, however the Bearcats failed to score again in the loss.
Newman cut the lead to 4-2 after the fifth inning and then got a three-run seventh inning to take the lead. Two of the runs came with two outs. Newman tacked on another insurance run on in the eighth inning and Griffin Campbell came in to get the save for the Jets (4-11).
Kenny Brengle got the start on the mound for the Bearcats. Brengle pitched five and one-thirds of solid baseball, allowing two runs on just three hits. Brengle also didn't allow a Newman hit until the fifth inning. Jayson Huett and Matt Stropoli came on in relief for Northwest. Huett was tagged with his first loss of the season, pitching one and two-thirds and allowing two runs.
Connell, DeAngelis, McGlaufflin and Rosales all collected two hits for the Bearcats in the loss as Northwest had 10 hits overall as a team to Newman's seven.
The Bearcats begin conference play beginning on Friday. Northwest will travel to second-ranked Central Missouri for a four-game set. First pitch on Friday is set for 3 p.m. in Warrensburg, Mo.
