Bearcats drop season opener to West Texas A&M
CANYON, Texas-West Texas A&M hit three home runs, collected 20 hits and scored nine runs in the first three innings to defeat Northwest Missouri State on Friday night 12-5 in the Bearcats' season opener in game one of four between the two teams this weekend.
After the Buffaloes (11-2) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning, Northwest cut the lead in half after an RBI double by Evan Connell and an RBI single by Jake Kretzer. West Texas got a five-run third inning to lengthen its lead and never looked back.
Kretzer would also hit a two-run homer to left field to bring in Connell in the fifth inning in his Bearcat debut. Connell had another RBI double in the seventh inning to provide the rest of the Northwest offense.
Matt Stropoli got the start on the hill for the Bearcats. Stropoli pitched two and two-thirds of an inning, allowing nine runs on 10 hits and struck-out three batters. Jeremy Tate and Christian Dekker provided five and one-thirds of relief for Northwest. Tate gave up three runs on nine hits in four innings of work. Alec Rosales went 2-4 in the game in his Bearcat debut.
Northwest (0-1) will play a doubleheader Saturday afternoon against West Texas, beginning at noon. The game on Friday was moved up from Sunday due to predicted inclement weather Sunday afternoon in Canyon. The Bearcats will still play a nine-inning game on Sunday against the Buffaloes.
