Southern Tops Northwest in Elimination Game

Box Score

KANSAS CITY, Kan.-The bottom four hitters of Missouri Southern's lineup combined for 10 hits, seven runs and eight RBIs as the Lions beat Northwest Missouri State 10-3 Friday in an elimination contest at the MIAA Baseball Tournament hosted by CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

Lion right fielder Patrick Deao went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and teammates Shayne Hoke and Michael Zurmehly each hit solo home runs. Missouri Southern outhit Northwest 14-9.

Northwest right fielder Brandon Kirsch went 4-for-5 and finished a triple short of the cycle. His sixth home run of the season gave the Bearcats a 1-0 lead in the first. Kirsch had two singles and a double in his next three at bats before flying out to center field for the final out of the game.

Matt Stice had two hits for Northwest and stole his team-leading 26th base of the season. Stice and Kirsch combined for 11 of the Bearcats' 19 hits in two games at the MIAA tournament. Northwest's five thru nine hitters combined to go 2-for-22.

Missouri Southern led 5-3 heading into the seventh inning and had the bases loaded with one out. Zurmehly hit a routine ground ball to second base that should have led to an inning-ending double play, but Northwest shortstop Bryce McCrary couldn't get the ball out of his glove in time to complete the turn. The Lions' next three batters had RBI singles to make it 9-3.

C.J. Maffei (7-5) entered in the fifth inning and pitched 3-and-one-thirds inning of scoreless relief before leaving in the eighth inning after being struck in the forearm by a line drive hit by Cameron Bedard. Tyler Jinks replaced Maffei and retired all five batters he faced to close the game.
