Stice Has Three Hits in Loss to Central Missouri

Box Score

KANSAS CITY, Kan.-Northwest Missouri State center fielder Matt Stice had three hits and scored two runs, but it was all Central Missouri in the first game of the MIAA Tournament Thursday at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. The top-seeded Mules pounded out 16 hits and won 12-2 in seven innings.

It was the third multi-hit game for Stice in four games and second three-hit game he's had this season. Stice singled and scored in the first inning to give Northwest a 1-0 lead. He doubled and scored in the third to make it 6-2 and added a lead-off single in the fifth.

Central Missouri had 10 hits and led 6-1 through two innings. Frank Specht finished 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Tyler Ruch went 3-for-3 and drove in two. Jon Wegener had two hits, including his 11th home run of the season, and drove in three runs.

Brandon Kirsch and Jon Henne Jr. had two hits apiece for the Bearcats and made some spectacular plays in the field. Kirsch battled the wind and made two diving grabs in right field. Henne fell into the stands while catching a foul ball that ended the fourth inning and stranded runners on first and second.

Northwest's base running was another story.

Henne was thrown out at the plate by Ruch in left field while trying to score from second base on a single by Trevor Conner in the third inning. Kirsch got caught in a run down in the fifth inning after trying to advance to second while the Mules made a play on Stice who went from first to third. The Bearcats' first three batters singled in the fifth, but no runs were scored.

Brooks Martin (10-0) went the distance for the Mules, allowing 10 hits and striking out eight while walking two. Chase Anderson (2-1) took the loss for Northwest.

The Bearcats (20-33) resume play in the double-elimination tournament at 11 a.m. Friday against the loser of second-seeded Emporia State and fifth-seeded Missouri Southern, which were scheduled to play the second game Thursday.
