Kurtz Provides Spark as Bearcats Take Two
PITTSBURG, Kan.-Northwest Missouri State took the first two games of a four-game series against Pittsburg State Saturday afternoon. The Bearcats won the first game 6-1 and came from behind for a 5-4 win in game two.
In the first game Northwest scored a run in each of the first two innings before plating four runs in the seventh inning to lengthen the Bearcat lead. Kreed Kurtz provided the offensive spark for the Bearcats in the game as he had a pinch-hit three-run home run in the seventh inning. Matt Stice was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI, Bryce McCrary went 1-for-2 and also had a run and RBI in the win.
Chris Green got the start on the hill and moved to 7-3 on the season with the victory. Green pitched six scoreless innings, allowing three hits.
In game two, the Bearcats jumped out again to an early lead until Pittsburg State got a four-run fourth inning to take a 4-1 lead. After Northwest added a run in the fifth and sixth inning, the Bearcats got two runs in the top of the eighth to take a 5-4 lead. Kurtz and Landinn Echardt would drive in the two runs for Northwest in the deciding inning. McCrary and Jon Henne Jr. also added an RBI each in the win.
Kenny Brengle got the start for Northwest, pitching three and two-thirds of an inning, allowing three runs on four hits. Jayson Huett came into the game in relief and picked up his third win of the season. Huett pitched five and one-thirds of an inning and gave up one run. Huett also picked-off PSU's Taylor Sibala at first base to end the game.
Northwest improves to 15-26 overall and 13-15 overall. The Bearcats have also won 9 of their last 10 ball games. Northwest will finish its four-game series with Pittsburg State tomorrow in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
