Bearcats Take First Two From SBU
MARYVILLE, Mo.-The Northwest Missouri State baseball team picked up a doubleheader sweep Friday afternoon at Bearcat Field over Southwest Baptist. The Bearcats won the first game 5-3 and took the second game 9-5.
Joe Kankovsky had a huge offensive game for Northwest. Kankovsky was 3-for-4 with two home runs, a double and three RBIs. Matt Stice was 2-for-2, scored a run and also had Northwest's other RBI in the victory.
Chris Green moved to 5-3 with the win. Green pitched four and two-thirds of an inning, giving up three runs on four hits and striking-out three SBU batters. Jayson Huett came on in relief and picked up the first save of the season for the Bearcats. Huett went two and one-thirds of an inning, allowing no runs on one hit and struck-out four.
In game two, Southwest Baptist jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. That's when Northwest put together a two-run fifth inning and a six-run sixth inning to take a 8-3 lead. The Bearcats would add another run in the seventh after SBU scored two runs of its own in the seventh inning. Kenny Brengle got the start for the Bearcats. Brengle pitched six innings, giving up four earned runs on four hits and struck-out five batters. Huett once again came on in relief, going two and two-thirds of an inning, striking-out four and allowing one hit.
Kreed Kurtz was the Bearcats' offensive spark in game two. Kurtz went 3-of-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Jon Henne Jr. was 2-for-4 and Luke Lavicky was 1-of-4 with a run and two RBIs. Kankovsky, Nick Pfeiffer and Bryce McCrary would each drive in a run in the win as well.
Northwest (10-25, 8-14 MIAA) finishes its four-game series with Southwest Baptist tomorrow in a doubleheader with the first pitch at noon.
