Northwest Splits With Missouri Western on Day Two
ST. JOSEPH, Mo.-Matt Stice went 4-for-9 with two home runs and nine RBI as Northwest Missouri State split a doubleheader with Missouri Western Sunday afternoon. The Bearcats were victorious in the first game 11-8 and lost a tough second game, 9-7 in 10 innings.
The Bearcat offense was explosive in the doubleheader as eight different Bearcats scored on the day. Landinn Echardt went 5-for-8 with a home run, a triple and seven RBI in the split. Jon Henne Jr. was 5-for-7 with two doubles, an RBI and four runs on the day.
Northwest jumped out to an 11-0 lead in game one before surviving a Griffon seven-run sixth inning to hang on for the victory. Chris Green picked up his third victory of the year. Green went five and one-thirds of an inning, giving up six runs on eight hits.
In the second game the Bearcats would jump out to another early lead before Missouri Western took a 4-3 lead into the fourth inning until Northwest regained the lead with two runs in the inning. After the two teams traded runs, the Bearcats tied the game up in the top of the ninth to push the game to extra innings. Western's Vince Romo eliminated Northwest's home for a sweep with a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the tenth to push the Griffons to the victory. Jeremy Tate pitched five and one-thirds of an inning in the start for the Bearcats. Tate struck-out four while giving up six runs.
Northwest (5-22, 3-11 MIAA) will host nationally-ranked Emporia State in a four-game series this Friday and Saturday. Northwest will play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Friday and another doubleheader at noon on Saturday.
