Kirsch Homers Thrice in Split With MSSU
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State senior Brandon Kirsch hit three consecutive home runs and drove in seven runs during a doubleheader split with Missouri Southern Tuesday at Bearcat Field. Northwest won game one 6-5 while Missouri Southern took the nightcap 6-4.
Kirsch hit a grand slam in the third inning of game one to give the Bearcats a 4-3 lead. His next at bat came in the sixth when he drove a solo shot to left field. The blast proved to be the game-winning hit as the Lions went down 1-2-3 in the seventh. Kirsch hit a three-run homer in the first inning of game two, giving him three home runs in three at bats.
Kirsch entered the contest with one home run in 16 games. He has 33 homers in his four-year career and is two RBIs shy of 100. Kirsch finished 4-for-7 during the twin bill.
Game two was decided on a two-run homer by Joe Lincoln in the top of the ninth that broke a 4-4 tie. Garrett Groom (2-3) pitched his third complete game of the season, allowing 10 hits and striking out nine while walking no one. Jacob Taylor went 4-for-5 with two doubles in game two for the Lions.
Chris Green (2-2) went the distance on the mound for the Bearcats in game one, allowing seven hits and striking out four in seven innings. Bryce McCrary had an RBI single in the opener and finished with three hits on the day.
Northwest (4-18, 2-8 MIAA) played its first home games of the season after playing its first 20 on the road. Missouri Southern (8-15, 6-10) saw a four-game win streak snapped before salvaging the split.
