Bearcats Drop Two at Nebraska-Kearney
KEARNEY,Neb.-Northwest Missouri State dropped both games of a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon against Nebraska-Kearney. The Bearcats lost game one 5-3 and fell in the second game 6-5.
In game one, Northwest jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a Brandon Kirsch two-run single in the third inning. After the two teams traded a run, Nebraska-Kearney got a four-run sixth inning to put them ahead for good.
Kirsch went 1-for-4 in the game, with his two RBI, while Matt Stice was 1-for-2 with two runs and a walk. Eric Mitchell got the start for the Bearcats. Mitchell went five innings, giving up four hits and just one earned run.
In the second game of the day, Northwest tied the game in the top of the fourth inning after a three-run spurt. Nebraska-Kearney would add a run of its own in the bottom of the inning and scored two more in the sixth inning to lengthen its lead to 6-3. The Bearcats would rally for two more runs in the top of the seventh before their comeback bid fell short.
Kreed Kurtz went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI in the loss. Trevor Conner went 2-for-3 with a run and a walk, while Jon Henne Jr. went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Trent Kohlstaedt pitched three innings for the Bearcats. Kohlstaedt gave up four runs on seven hits, while striking-out seven batters.
Northwest (3-18) will host its first home series of the year, beginning a four-game set on Friday against Missouri Southern.
