Northwest Goes Extra Innings to Defeat Southern

Box Score

JOPLIN, Mo. - Nick Pfeiffer used his first plate appearance in more than a month to reach base in the eighth inning and later score the game-winning run as Northwest Missouri State (18-24, 10-18 MIAA) defeated Missouri Southern (28-15, 19-9 MIAA) 4-3 today at Joe Becker Stadium.

Trevor Conner led off his second straight game with a single and extended his hitting streak to a career-best nine games. Northwest and Missouri Southern went scoreless through the first two innings until back-to-back-to-back doubles from Luke Lavicky, Chris Benham and Bill Disselhoff scored two runs in the third frame.

The Lions took the lead with three runs in the fourth inning before Disselhoff hit his sixth home run of the season to tie the game at 3-3 in the sixth inning. Both teams had chances to score in the final two innings, including bases loaded for Northwest in the seventh inning, but neither could send a runner across to plate to send the Bearcats to their sixth extra-inning game of the season.

Pfeiffer reached on an error with two outs in the top of the eighth inning and scored three pitches later after a double down the left field line from Kreed Kurtz. The Lions placed their first batter on base off an error and advanced him to second on a sacrifice bunt before Jacob Kemper retired the next two batters on a fly out and strikeout.

Benham went two-of-three for his 10th multi-hit game this season. Disselhoff went two-of-four, both for extra bases, with a run and two RBIs. The Bearcats have recorded 31 hits in the first two games of the series and are averaging 12 hits during the last five games.

Bret Harvel went 6.2 innings with four strikeouts and three runs while Kemper picked up his second win of the season. The two combined for five strikeouts and allowed no extra base hits from the Lions, who are in the top five in MIAA statistics in doubles, triples and home runs.
