Northwest Struggles Against No. 19 Mavericks

MARYVILLE, Mo. - Northwest Missouri State (15-21, 7-15 MIAA) used a big inning in game two to take the lead but No. 19 Nebraska-Omaha (31-10, 21-5 MIAA) used multiple big innings in both games to take a doubleheader sweep today at Bearcat Field. Scores went 11-3 and 14-6 in favor of the Mavericks.

Trevor Conner scored in the first inning of the opening game to keep Nebraska-Omaha within a run before the Mavericks used four-run innings in the second and third frames to take a 10-2 lead. Bill Disselhoff recorded his fourth home run of the season on his first pitch of the fifth inning and Tim Beck added another run in the seventh inning after reaching base on a leadoff walk from closer Michael McClaren.

Ben Briant went the longest of the Northwest pitchers in game one with a four-inning appearance. He allowed four hits and only one run with two strikeouts.

The Bearcats placed seven runners on base in the fourth inning of game two and scored four runs to take their first lead of the day at 4-2. Matt Stice and Chris Benham had back-to-back doubles to score three of the four runs after Kreed Kurtz and Trevor Conner recorded singles earlier in the inning. The Bearcat led until the Mavericks answered with four runs in the fifth inning and five runs in the ninth to take 14-4 advantage.

Northwest led off the bottom of the ninth with a single from Disselhoff and an RBI double from Jon Henne, Jr. Bret Harper advanced Henne, Jr., with a sacrifice hit before Kreed Kurtz drove in Henne, Jr., with a double down the left field line. The comeback ended after a ground out to third base after a three-hit ninth inning for the Bearcats.

Benham extended his hitting streak to a career-best 10 games and Nick Pfeiffer made his first appearance since March 17 with a defensive appearance at second base in the ninth inning.
