Bearcats Win Two, Even Series With Augustana
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Four Northwest Missouri State pitchers combined to allow seven hits in 14 innings to lead the Bearcats to a doubleheader sweep of Augustana Saturday at Bearcat Field. Scores went 6-2 and 9-3. Augustana (15-9) won the opening two games of the series Friday.
Christian Dekker (2-3) allowed two base hits in 5 2/3 innings in the opener. He walked five and struck out five. Trevor Theismann replaced Dekker in the sixth inning and got the final four outs to earn his first save of the season.
Northwest (13-19) had just three hits in the opener, but capitalized off four Viking miscues. The Bearcats got a single from leadoff hitter Tim Beck in a three-run first inning, received a double from Jon Henne Jr. and scored a run in the fourth and got an RBI single from Chris Benham in a two-run fifth.
Five of the Bearcats' six runs in game one were unearned.
Five Augustana pitchers combined to issue 12 free passes in six innings of work in game two. The Bearcats trailed 3-1 in the fourth, but got five runs in the inning to take the lead. Kreed Kurtz, Bryan Picard and Beck each had RBI hits in the inning.
Northwest tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning. Beck used a sacrifice fly to plate his second run of the game. He also stole two bases during the twin bill. Matt Stice and Chris Benham each had RBI singles to account for Northwest's final runs.
Trent Kohlstaedt (2-2) allowed two hits in 4 2/3 innings of relief of starter Jeff Gradel Jr., issuing no free passes and striking out three.
No Bearcat had more than two hits on the day, though eight hit safely, eight scored and seven drove in a run.
