Bearcats Fall in One-Run Games to Vikings
MARYVILLE, Mo. - Northwest Missouri State scored first in both games but Augustana used late runs in both contests to claim 4-3 and 2-1 victories today at Bearcat Field. The Bearcats (11-19) combined to outhit the Vikings (15-7) 18-12 in the doubleheader.
Northwest had loaded-bases with no outs in both the first and fifth innings but couldn't advance a runner across the plate. The Bearcats were able to score in the fourth inning after a leadoff triple from Jared Erspamer was followed by a double from Bret Harper.
Augustana answered with three runs in the seventh inning after the Vikings' first two batters grounded out. Augustana was able to place its next five runners on base, two off of doubles, to take a 4-1 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.
The Bearcats were able to tally two runs in the seventh inning off a two-out single by Erspamer to drive in Chris Benham and Tim Beck, but couldn't close the gap in the 4-3 loss.
Eric Mitchell struck out six batters and allowed one run in his five and one third innings of work in the start.
In game two, the Bearcats scored first in the third inning after Bryan Picard picked up his first collegiate triple and Beck drove him in on a sacrifice fly to right field. A leadoff home run from Jeff Green in the sixth inning tied the score for Augustana and the Vikings took the lead on a two-out single from Charles Dubanoski to score Ian Strum.
Northwest had the tying run at second base in the bottom of the seventh inning in Tim Avants when a Harper single to right field provided the chance to tie the game at 2-2. But the throw from Gates Cook to catcher JaColby Anderson got Avants out at the plate for the second out and moved Harper to second on the throw. A four-pitch walk to Trevor Conner and a an errant ball that hit Kreed Kurtz loaded the bases for Bryan Picard, who put it in play to the shortstop who made the out at second base.
Up Next: The Augustana series continues tomorrow one hour earlier, with doubleheader action beginning at 11 a.m. from Bearcat Field.
