Northwest-Missouri Western Rivalry Renews Sunday Afternoon
MARYVILLE, Mo. - Northwest Missouri State (9-14, 4-10 MIAA) and Missouri Western (15-13, 4-8 MIAA) renew their rivalry on the diamond with a pair of doubleheaders Sunday and Monday at Bearcat Field. Both will be seven and nine-inning doubleheaders starting at 1 p.m.
The Bearcats are looking to get back into the win column after suffering a four-game sweep at Washburn last weekend. The Griffons are on a five-game win streak after claiming a four-game sweep against Upper Iowa and taking the final game of a doubleheader against Nebraska-Omaha.
Kreed Kurtz has the MIAA's third-longest active hitting streak at eight games dating back to March 15. He's improved his batting average 43 points in that span and went three-of-eight in the last doubleheader against the Griffons April 9, 2008.
Jared Erspamer continues to lead the Bearcat offense in his first season. He's leads Northwest with a .321 batting average, .491 slugging percentage and .390 on-base percentage after his four-year playing career for the Northwest football team. He's on pace to finish with 16 doubles this season and tie for ninth in program records.
Unless Mother Nature intervenes and shortens the series, Head Coach Darin Loe will be coaching his 800th career game in the first game of Monday's doubleheader. In his first 797 games and 16 seasons, Loe has gone 427-370 and in his 10 seasons at Northwest is 271-236. He is 21-17 all-time against Missouri Western.
Bret Harvel averaged a strikeout per inning in two appearances against the Griffons last season. He posted the first of his three shutouts of 2008 against Missouri Western. Another shutout this weekend will increase his career total to four and tie him for second in program records.
