Bearcats Combine for 20 Hits in Split with Tigers
HAYS, Kan. - Bill Disselhoff hit a home run for the third straight game in game one and Brandon Kirsch added a three-run shot in game two as Northwest Missouri State (6-7, 2-3 MIAA) split with Fort Hays State (13-8, 5-2 MIAA) today in Larks Park.
Nick Pfeiffer hit a home run to left field in the first inning, his second of the season, as the Bearcats scored in the first three innings to take a 4-0 lead. Northwest nearly went through the order in the seventh inning and tacked on two more runs on three hits, which would help stave off a four-run inning by the Tigers in their final inning.
Bret Harvel allowed no runs or walks and struck out two batters in six innings for his second win of the season. He moves into a tie for eighth in career records with his 11th victory.
Kreed Kurtz went two-of-three in the first game with a double and a pair of runs and RBIs. Disselhoff homered for the third straight game in the third inning and Jared Erspamer used his only at-bat to double in the sixth inning as the Bearcats won 6-4.
Fort Hays State held Northwest to a single hit and scored six runs through the first three innings. After a scoreless fourth inning for both teams, the Bearcats batted through the order in both the fifth and sixth innings and combined for nine runs off eight hits to take a 9-7 lead going into the bottom of the sixth.
The Tigers answered in the bottom of the sixth with six runs with four coming off a grand slam from Dusty Washburn. Fort Hays State also went through the order and held the Bearcats to two hits in the top of the seventh for the 13-9 decision.
Trevor Conner went four of five and accounted for a third of the Bearcats' hits in the second game. Kirsch hit his third home run of the season and Pfeiffer made two of his three RBIs with an inside-the-park home run off an outfield error as part of the six-run fifth inning.
Up Next: Northwest Missouri State wraps up its four-game series with Fort Hays State tomorrow with a single nine-inning game at noon.
