Kirsch Hits Grand Slam in 5-4 Bearcat Victory
HAYS, Kan. - Brandon Kirsch hit a grand slam in the first inning and Christian Dekker went a season-best six innings to claim his first Northwest win as the Bearcats snapped a five-game losing streak with a 5-4 victory against Fort Hays State at Larks Park.
It's the first loss for the Tigers in 13 games and snaps a three-game winning streak for the Tigers in the all-time series.
Nick Pfeiffer, Chris Benham and Bill Disselhoff each reached on singles in the first inning before Kirsch sent a homer past the left field wall on a 2-2 count. It's the first career grand slam for Kirsch and the first for the Bearcats since last season against the Tigers.
Disselhoff hit his second home run of the season in the third inning to increase the Bearcat lead to five. He would end up three-of-four with two runs.
Justin Groff lead off the bottom of the third with a double, but wouldn't score until two outs later off a single from Brett Becker to put Fort Hays State on the scoreboard. Becker would score off a single from Greg Bieker to bring the Tigers within three at 5-2 at the end of the third inning.
A Dusty Washburn home run in the eighth inning and a fielding error in the ninth inning brought Fort Hays State within one with no outs. Back-to-back fielder choices kept the Tigers out of scoring position before Nash Smith ground out to Pfeiffer.
Dekker struck out four batters and allowed two earned runs to improve his season average by more than four runs. Jacob Kemper picked up his third save with one strikeout in the ninth inning.
Up Next: Northwest gets a chance to move back above .500 tomorrow with a doubleheader against Fort Hays State. The first of two, seven-inning games begin at 1 p.m.
