All-MIAA Baseball Team Released

KANSAS CITY, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State had four baseball players earn second-team All-MIAA honors as voted on by the league's head coaches and released by the conference office Monday.

Infielders Ryan Bledsoe and Nick Pfeiffer and pitchers Evan Nickell and Bret Harvel earned all-conference recognition. Britt Westman and Ben Malick earned honorable mention honors.

Bledsoe, a senior from Union, Mo., started all 51 games at shortstop this season and set the Bearcats' single-season record for hits with 81. Bledsoe led the team with a .391 average, 60 runs scored and 19 doubles. He hit eight home runs, stole 18 bases and finished with 38 RBIs.

Bledsoe hit safely in the final 22 games of his career and hit .432 with seven home runs and 13 doubles in that span. He finished with a team-best 23 multi-hit games and had three four-hit efforts.

Pfeiffer, a sophomore from Winigan, Mo., started all but four games at second base this season. He batted .337 with a home run, 23 RBIs and 30 runs scored. He stole nine bases and finished with a fielding percentage of .971.

Pfeiffer had a 13-game hitting streak during the year and finished with 14-multi hit games. He was 4-for-6 in a game against Pittsburg State in late April and homered against Arkansas Tech in the season opener.

Nickell, a senior from Smithville, Mo., is one of two relievers selected to the all-conference team. Nickell finished second in the league with eight saves. He carried a record of 3-7 and an ERA of 3.29. Nickell pitched in 21 games and struck out 19 in 38 1/3 innings pitched.

Harvel (5-2), a junior from Lee's Summit, Mo., paced the Bearcats' staff with 11 starts, five wins and three shutouts. Harvel appeared in 14 games overall and logged an ERA of 5.79. He finished seventh in the league in strikeouts with 64 in 65 1/3 innings pitched.

Northwest finished 2008 with a record of 29-22. The Bearcats were 18-16 in league play and settled for fifth place in the MIAA standings.
