Northwest Drops Pair to Hornets

EMPORIA, Kan. - The Northwest Missouri State baseball team dropped a doubleheader to No. 4 Emporia State, 8-1 and 15-6, in front of 673 at Glennen field. Chris Benham finished 3-for-7 with a home run and double in the twinbill.

The sweep drops Northwest to 22-18 (12-12 MIAA) and improves Emporia State to 40-3 (26-0 MIAA). The Hornets have won 33 straight games, a conference record.

Game One

The Bearcats fell behind 2-0 early, but cut the lead in half with a Benham solo home run off the scoreboard in right center. Bill Disselhoff paced Northwest on the mound and allowed just two hits in the first three innings and finished the game with two strikeouts.

The Bearcats had great scoring opportunities in the first and the second, loading the bases with one out. Both times Hornet starter Tyler Applehans pitched out of the jam unscathed. Northwest stranded 11 runners total.

Emporia State smacked four round trippers, three two-run home runs and a solo shot, getting seven of their eight runs from long balls.

Benham finished 2-for-3 and Ben Malick 2-for-4. Disselhoff was tagged with the loss, dropping him to 2-2 on the season. Britt Westman earned to walks and is now tied for the all-time base on balls mark with 81 in his four-year career.

Game Two

The Bearcats gave up 15 runs in the first four innings, but made the Hornets post zeros on the board from the fifth on. Northwest trailed 7-2 when Kreed Kurtz smacked a two-run home run to right field in the top of the fourth. The Bearcats would not get any closer.

An eight run Emporia fourth gave them a 15-4 lead. Northwest tallied one run in the fifth and the seventh, Ryan Bledsoe smacking a solo home run and scoring on a single by Malick.

Bledsoe finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI's. Starter Danny Malone was handed the loss, moving him to 2-2.

The Bearcats will finish its four-game series with the Hornets April 20 at noon. Game one will be seven innings and game two will be nine innings.
