MARYVILLE -- The Northwest Missouri State baseball team split a double header with Washburn, winning game one 8-0 and losing game two 18-4. Brett Harvel dealt his second straight complete game shutout in the opener, allowing just two hits and four base runners in seven innings of work.

Northwest moves to 22-15 (12-10 MIAA) and Washburn to 10-21 (7-17 MIAA).

Game One

Harvel grabbed his fourth win of the season and struck out five in his second straight complete game shutout. Wes Joy led off the game with a single before Harvel retired the 16 of the next 18 batters. He tossed just 82 pitches, including a six pitch fifth inning.

Britt Westman started the scoring for the Bearcats with a towering two-run home run to left field in the first and Ben Malick added a run on a RBI-double in the third to make it 3-0 early.

Quality base running scored a few more runs for Northwest in the fourth. Trevor Conner and Chris Benham moved up to second and third after a wild pitch and Benham scored on an groundout by Ryan Bledsoe. Conner would score on an RBI-single by Malick making it a 7-0 margin for the Bearcats.

Kreed Kurtz drove in Brandon Kirsch in the fifth on a sacrifice fly to complete the Northwest scoring.

Game Two

Kirsch tied the game at one with a lead off home run to left in the second and the Bearcats would add two more in the third to take a 3-1 lead.

Northwest and Washburn battled to a 4-4 tie after four innings, but the Ichabods threw an 11 on the scoreboard in the fifth to blow the game out of reach.

The Bearcats sent seven different pitchers to the mound, but Ben Briant was handed the loss moving him to 1-1.

Kirsch and Nick Pfeiffer finished 2-for-3 and had four of the Bearcats six hits.

Northwest will host Nebraska-Kearney tomorrow, April 15, at 3 p.m. One nine-inning game is scheduled.
