Game One Box Score | Game Two Box Score

MARYVILLE -- The Northwest Missouri State baseball team dropped a double header to the Missouri Southern Lions, 3-1 and 7-2, in front of a 178 fans at Bearcat Field. It's just the second time Northwest has been swept this season.

The sweep moves Missouri Southern to 12-19 (10-7 MIAA) and drops Northwest to 17-13 (7-8 MIAA).

Game One

Southpaw starter Jeff Gradel Jr. nearly went the distance, logging 6 2/3 innings and allowing three runs on seven hits, but did not get much run support. Northwest had just five hits, two from Ben Malick, and mustered one run in the third. Gradel Jr. was handed the loss moving him to 2-2 on the season.

Lions starter Ryan Verfurth had six strikeouts and allowed two base runners after the third.

Ryan Bledsoe's 15-game hitting streak came to an end, going 0-for-4 at the plate.

Game Two

The bats continued to struggle for Northwest in game two, getting one hit in the first four innings, and falling behind 5-0.

Chris Benham led off the fifth with a walk, then advanced to second on a groundout. Bledsoe drove in Benham on a single to left, but was cut down at second base trying to advance an extra base on the throw home.

Southern would add two insurance runs in the top half of the seventh, heading into the bottom frame with a 7-1 lead.

Bill Disselhoff led off the seventh with a double to right field and pinch runner Tim Avants would move to third after a balk. A RBI-groundout by Kreed Kurtz scored Avants and Benham followed with a single to the right side. The Lions would turn a 6-4-3 double play to end any Bearcat comeback and take the double header.

Joel Epley logged his second complete game of the season, but was tagged with five unearned runs, four coming in the fourth inning, and took the loss.

Since the nine-run first Northwest put up against Southern in yesterday's win, Northwest has scored four runs on 13 hits in the past 22 innings.

Northwest and Southern will wrap up the four game set Sunday, April 6. A single, 9-inning, game is slated for 1 p.m.
