Tigers Sweep Twinbill From Bearcats
HAYS, Kan. - The Northwest Missouri State baseball team was swept by the Fort Hays State Tigers 8-4 and 9-1 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) play. It's just the second time this season the Bearcats have been swept in a double header.
The sweep drops Northwest to 15-9 (5-4 MIAA) and improves Fort Hays State to 8-15 (5-6 MIAA).
The Bearcats took an early 2-1 lead in the third thanks to an RBI-single by Nick Pfeiffer and RBI-double by Ben Malick. Northwest would relinquish the lead in the bottom half and trail 3-2.
Jake Bradshaw tied the game at three in the fourth on a one-hop line drive back up the middle off the leg of starting pitcher Donnie Moore. The liner knocked Moore out of the game and Brian Thompson replaced the injured starter.
A two-run home run by Chase Schippers broke the tie and gave the Tigers a 5-3 lead in the fifth. Fort Hays would add one more in the frame and lead 6-3 heading into the sixth.
A Tiger error allowed one Bearcat run to score, but Thompson would silence the bats the rest of the way and Fort Hays would add two more insurance runs to win 8-4.
Bradshaw finished the 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored. Joel Epley took the loss, dropping him to 2-2.
Northwest could not figure out Tiger starter Matt Augustine, smacking five hits and striking out six times.
Ryan Bledsoe led off the sixth with a double down the left field line and scored on a bases-loaded single by Britt Westman. The Bearcats left six runners on bases, including three in the first two innings and
Zach Weston closed out the game and retired all eight batters he faced. Jeff Gradel Jr. was handed the loss, moving him to 2-1 on the season.
