Late Runs Lift Bearcats Past Tigers
HAYS, Kan. - The Northwest Missouri State baseball teams got one run in the ninth and tenth innings to beat Fort Hays State 4-3 in 10 innings in front of 700 fans. The win improves Northwest to 15-7 (5-2 MIAA) and drops the Tigers to 6-15, 3-6 MIAA).
Kreed Kurtz clobbered a leadoff home run over the right field fence to tie the game at three in the ninth and Bill Disselhoff drove in Brandon Kirsch in the tenth to give the Bearcats a 4-3 lead. Evan Nickell picked up the win, moving him to 2-3, and Tim Avants caught the last out on the warning track to ensure the Bearcats victory.
Kirsch opened the scoring with a solo home run in the second inning, but the Tigers countered with three runs, all with two outs, on back-to-back home runs in the bottom half. Bearcat starter Brett Harvel would settle down after the second and get out of a bases-loaded one-out jam in the fifth by striking out the final two batters.
The Bearcats are now 3-1 in extra inning games this season.
Northwest will battle Fort Hays State tomorrow, March 29, at 1 p.m. Two seven-inning double headers are slated.
