Bearcats Drop Opener, Win Nightcap Versus WSC
WAYNE, Neb. - The Northwest Missouri State baseball team split a doubleheader with No. 18 Wayne State College losing game one 5-4 and winning game two 12-4. Northwest led 4-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh in game one, but a two-run, walk-off home run won it for the Wildcats.
Wayne State plated three runs in the first inning on three hits to take an early 3-0 lead. The Bearcats cut into the lead when Brandon Kirsch drove in Nick Pfeiffer to make it a 3-1 ball game in the third.
Danny Malone, who logged six innings, allowed just two hits after the first inning and struck out five.
In the seventh, Jake Bradshaw started the rally with a triple to right field and Ryan Bledsoe followed with a wind aided, pop-up infield single to put runners at the corners and trailing by two. Pfieffer doubled down the right field line and drove in Bradshaw, making it a 3-2 game.
Malick tied the game with an RBI-ground out and Britt Westman gave Northwest a 4-3 lead on a line drive single off the glove of Wildcats third baseman.
Evan Nickell replaced Malone in the seventh and retired the first batter. Justin Hemauer then laid down a bunt single and with two outs, Marc Manganaro knocked the walk off home run to right center.
The Northwest bats started hot to begin the nightcap. Nine runs in the first three innings gave the Bearcats an early 9-4 lead thanks to two hits by Ryan Bledsoe, Pfieffer and Westman.
Adam Switzer gave up all four runs in the first three innings, but settled down and logged 5 2/3, striking out four in his first victory of the season.
Bledsoe finished 4-for-5, a home run short of the cycle, and scored three runs. Pfieffer was 3-for-3 with three RBI's and Westman drove in three RBI's in his 2-for-5 performance.
