Northwest Splits With Beavers
MARYVILLE - The Northwest Missouri State baseball team split with the Buena Vista Beavers losing game one 3-2 and winning game two 13-4. The doubleheader was added to Northwest's schedule late last week.
Buena Vista jumped out to an early 2-0 lead plating two runs in the first inning. The Bearcats cut into the small margin with a run in the second. Brandon Kirsch tripled down the right field line and Chris Benham drove him in with an infield single.
The Bearcats knotted the game at two in the fifth with a bases loaded single by Britt Westman. Nick Pfieffer leadoff the seventh with a single, but was stranded at second after a successful sacrifice bunt.
Kevin Kloewer gave the Beavers the 3-2 lead with a solo home run in the ninth and Kyle Dupic picked up the save.
Evan Nickell relieved starter Sean Brady and was handed the loss. Benham finished 1-for-4 with an RBI and stole his team-high 12th stolen base.
Zach Weston tossed a complete game, the second of his career, allowing just one earned run and striking out four. The Bearcat took the lead in the first with a pair of runs. Westman doubled and Kirsch knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly.
The Beavers captured the lead in the second scoring three runs on three Bearcat errors. Buena Vista would add one more run in the third and led 4-2. Weston coasted the remainder of the game blanking the Beavers for the final four innings.
The Bearcats retook the lead in the third with three runs on two hits and blew open the game in the fifth plating five runs. In the fifth Northwest took advantage of eratic Beaver pitching, drawing four walks and two hit-by-pitches.
Westman finished 3-for-3 and scored three runs. Chris Benham went 2-for-4 at the plate and drove in one run.
- The last meeting with Buena Vista was in 1984. The Bearcats swept the doubleheader 3-2 and 10-0.
- Northwest added this doubleheader to its schedule.
- It was the first career start for Brady.
- Weston got his first start since his freshman season.
- It's the third time this season Northwest has played an extra inning game.
- In game two, Northwest was hit-by-a-pitch five times.
