Northwest Caps Road Trip With Seventh Win

MEMPHIS, Tenn.-Northwest Missouri State jumped out to a six-run lead and held on for a 6-5 win Friday against Christian Brothers at Buc Field. It's the seventh straight win for the Bearcats (7-2), who finished undefeated on its road trip through Arkansas, Florida and Tennessee. Christian Brothers (7-5) lost for the first time in eight games.

Four Northwest pitchers provided six innings of relief and retired the final 10 batters they faced to preserve the lead and the win. Brett Harvel (2-0) worked 2 1/3 innings and got the win. Evan Nickell pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his fourth save of the season.

The Bearcats scored three runs in both the second and third innings and chased Buc starter Justin Hopper with one out in the second inning. Jake Bradshaw had an RBI single in the second inning. Nick Pfeiffer singled and drove in a run in the third. Pfeiffer has hit safely in four consecutive games.

The Bucs got two runs back in the bottom of the third and made it 6-3 on Mark Foster's triple in the fourth. Harvel replaced starter Jeff Gradel Jr. on the mound with no outs and Foster at third base and got two strikeouts before getting Will Britt to foul out to end the inning.

Harvel retired the first two batters in the bottom of the sixth before running into trouble. Back-to-back singles followed by a bean ball loaded the bases for Joseph Kaminski who doubled in two runs to make it 6-5. Northwest coach Darin Loe turned to Ben Briant who got Alvino Ramirez to ground out to end the inning.

Briant pitched a perfect seventh and Danny Malone a perfect eighth before handing the ball to Nickell.

Ryan Bledsoe was 2-for-5 with two RBIs for the Bearcats. He had a sacrifice fly in the second to make it 2-0 Northwest and an RBI groundout in the third to make it 5-0.

Kreed Kurtz, Chris Benham along with Bradshaw and Pfeiffer had two hits apiece for Northwest. Kurtz and Benham scored two runs each.

Next Up: Northwest is scheduled to play its home opener Tuesday, March 4, against Nebraska-Omaha.
