Long Balls Give Northwest Sweep

MONTICELLO, Ark. - The Northwest Missouri State baseball team picked up their first sweep of the 2008 season beating Arkansas-Monticello 15-4 and 5-2 in two seven-inning contests. Northwest smacked four home runs, two from the bat of Kreed Kurtz, and 24 hits throughout the day.

The Bearcats improve to 2-2 and drop Arkansas-Monticello to 0-10.

Ryan Bledsoe led off the 15-4 win with a double and spurted the Bearcats to a five-run first inning. Britt Westman drove in Bledsoe on a single, Kurtz scored Todd Schonhoff on a sacrifice fly, Nick Pfeiffer lined a 2-RBI single and Chris Benham scored on a double-steal with all nine Bearcats coming to the plate.

Bret Harvel scattered 10 hits and allowed three runs in 5 2/3 innings of work. He picked up his first win of the season. Ben Stedronsky finished the last 1 1/3 and struck out a pair.

Northwest added three more runs in the third and one in the fifth before the big seventh. Pfeiffer led off the inning with a single and Westman capped the big inning with a three-run bomb to right center. Ten batters came to plate and the first seven reached base.

The Bearcats knocked around four Boll Weevil pitchers and took advantage of six base on balls and three hit-by-pitches.

Trevor Conner started the scoring in game two with an RBI-double in the third. The Boll Weevils tied up the ballgame 1-1 in the bottom half on an RBI-groundout. With one-out in the fourth, Kurtz cloubbered a three-run round tripper over the scoreboard in right center and gave Northwest a 4-1 lead.

Conner added a solo home run, his first career, in the seventh to extend the Bearcats lead to three, 5-2.

Jeff Gradel Jr., got his first start of the year in and Evan Nickell picked up his first save. Gradel logged 4 2/3 innings, allowed just one earned run and struck out five. Nickell picked up a six-out save and faced one above the minimum.
