Northwest Win Opener 12-3 Versus Arkansas Tech
RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. - (stats) The Northwest Missouri State baseball team belted 13 hits in a 13-2 opening game victory against Arkansas Tech. The Bearcats scored four runs in the top of the first and five more in the top of the seventh. Starting sophomore right-hander Bret Harvel, a transfer from Missouri-Columbia, went six innings allowing four hits and three runs - gaining his first career win. At one point Harvel retired 12 straight batters.
In the first inning, senior catcher Ryley Westman had a two-RBI single to complete the first inning scoring. Northwest struggled with the bats for the next five innings, but exploded in the seventh bringing ten players to the plate. Junior outfielder Jake Bradshaw, a transfer from Kansas City Kansas Community College, started the Bearcats scoring with a two-RBI double. Three consecutive hits after Bradshaw's completed the scoring with a two-RBI single by junior first baseman Britt Westman.
Four players finished with at least two hits, led by Bradshaw's 3-for-5 performance at the plate and 2-for-3 performance in the stolen base department. Six players had two-RBI days at the plate. Senior shortstop John White and sophomore third baseman Ben Malick had two hits and RBI. Senior reliever Cody Sinclair finished what Harvel started going the last three-innings with one hit and three strikeouts.
Senior southpaw John Iverson (0-1) took the loss for the Wonder Boys. Four pitchers closed out the last three innings after Iverson completed six. Only one Tech player had a multi-hit game as sophomore outfielder Barret Davis went 2-for-4.
Northwest is 1-0 overall and actually sits atop the MIAA conference after today's action.
The Bearcats take play a doubleheader versus the Wonder Boys tomorrow at 1 p.m. and one nine inning game on Sunday at 1 p.m. The games are available through webcast on the Bearcat baseball homepage.
