Bret Harvel to Spend Summer Pitching for Saratoga Phillies

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Northwest Missouri State right-hander Bret Harvel will spend his summer pitching for the Saratoga Phillies, a member of the New York Collegiate Baseball League. The NYCBL is a summer wood bat league founded in 1978 that in sanctioned by the NCAA and is partially funded by Major League Baseball.

Harvel completed his first season with the Bearcats after transferring from the University of Missouri. At Northwest, Harvel went 4-4 in 13 appearances, pitching 68.1 innings. He led the team with a 3.16 earned run average and ranked second in innings pitched and strikeouts (45). He pitched a one-hitter against Emporia State on April 16.

Harvel is one of two NCAA Division II pitchers on the roster. Five pitchers from NCAA Division I institutions also made the roster.

The Saratoga Phillies are defending NYCBL champions, going 32-14 last season. The team will play a 44-game regular season beginning on June 8 at Bennington, N.Y., with the championship series scheduled for the first week of August.
