Northwest Ends Season in 8-1 Loss to Emporia State in MIAA Tournament
WARRENSBURG, Mo. - (L 1-8) Northwest Missouri State allowed five runs in the first inning and couldn't recover in an 8-1 loss to Emporia State in an elimination game of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Baseball Tournament at Tompkins Field and Crane Stadium on the campus of the University of Central Missouri.
The Bearcats end the season at 30-26. The Hornets, improving to 27-22, advance to face host Central Missouri in the MIAA Championship at 1 p.m. on May 13.
Conner Crumbliss walked on four pitches before Brian Majors hit a triple to the right field corner to score Crumbliss. Four more hits scored three runs and Andy Anderson placed a single in centerfield to score Matt Marasco to put the Hornets up 5-0.
Emporia State put an additional run up in the second inning, scoring Crumbliss off a single to left field by Keith Hernandez.
The Bearcats opened the third with back-to-back singles from sophomores Chris Benham and Ben Malick, but a strikeout and two fly-outs stranded two runners to finish the third.
The Hornets added two runs in the sixth with runs from Anderson and Crumbliss to take an 8-0 lead.
Northwest loaded the bases in the eighth inning with a lead-off single from Malick, a walk from junior Jake Bradshaw and single from senior John White. A groundout to second base by senior Ryley Westman scored Malick but a strike out from junior Britt Westman and fly-out from pinch hitter junior Todd Schonhoff stranded two runners to cap the eighth.
The Bearcats were unable to place a runner on base on the ninth with the Hornets retiring the first three batters in order.
Sophomore Bill Disselhoff took the loss on the mound, allowing five earned runs in the first earning, to finished 3-4 on the season. Brett Brandon pitched for the first seven innings to earn the win, improving to 4-0.
